Preventative Services

Our routine cleaning appointments with a dental hygienist focus on achieving gingival (gum) health and removing areas of plaque and tartar build up. Depending on the level of care your gums and teeth need, we recommend 2-4 cleaning appointments each year for optimal dental health. At the end of each cleaning appointment, your hygienist will give you oral hygiene instructions to better care for your teeth and gums at home.

Radiographs (or x-rays) are a part of optimal routine dental care. We at Livermore Dentistry recommend yearly x-ray examination to accurately assess your dental health. Our office is equipped with digital x-ray sensors that require minimal radiation to provide detailed images of the bone, teeth, roots, and restorations. VELscope is a quick and painless screening exam that can prevent the spread of deadly cancers by catching pre cancerous abnormalities. Oral cancer, or cancer of the mouth, is one of the most curable diseases when caught in the early stages of development.

The VELscope device emits a harmless, bright blue light which is used to inspect the mouth and tongue. If there are areas of tissue that have changed, they may look different under the light. These changes can happen for many reasons, and the VELscope helps us notice areas that may need a closer look, including early signs of oral cancer concerns. Dental sealants are a quick and easy solution for preventing cavities in developing mouths. Sealants are a resin material placed in the pits and fissures of the chewing surfaces of teeth, particularly the molars at the back where toothbrushes may have a hard time reaching. The American Dental Association recommends that kids receive dental sealants as soon as their adult back teeth erupt. Ask us about dental sealants at your child's next appointment.

A night guard is a custom dental device made to prevent excessive wear due to nighttime grinding or to treat overuse of jaw muscles while sleeping (TMJ). A digital scan of your mouth is used to create this BPA-free device that can be worn every night while sleeping. If you are noticing discomfort in your jaw muscles, general tooth pain, or chipped teeth, talk to us about options for night guards. We are happy to discuss night guards during routine appointments.
